Short warranty on an unreliable product

"I bought the first US version of the YouBrew. Due to the grinding mechanisms, the device is rather high maintenance and involves a lot of cleaning. Despite regularly cleaning and descaling, the device has stopped sending water through the machine during brewing. It also tends to leak excess water around the pot, leaving a mess on the counter.

Upon calling Breville, I learned that I would need to pay $99 and send the device back in to be repaired or replaced with a refurbished model because I was out of warranty.

I own quite a few Breville appliances and I think this will be my last.

If you love coffee, you're probably better off spending your money on a good grinder and just doing a pour over or buying a cheaper machine to do the brewing."

Excellent Coffee Machine

"Love this coffee machine! It is by far, the best coffee maker I have ever owned. This machine manages to consistently deliver cup after cup of great tasting brew.

I honestly never heard of Breville before this purchase. I accidently ran across a review of this machine in a blog after purchasing and returning 2 other coffee makers from 2 different manufacturers.

I use this pot mostly by the cup and this machine allows you to set the flavor and the strength which is a huge plus. It has multiple flavor settings from lite to bold and multiple strength settings from mild to intense and anywhere in between. It also has 9 different cup sizes to choose from and can handle my 7 1/2 inch travel mug.

This machine is environmentally friendly which is also a huge plus. It produces a bold, hot single cup of coffee without using those non-recyclable K-Cups that seem to be so prevalent today. It is also BPA free which is another plus.

I do suggest that you read the entire user manual before operating this machine for the first time. There are a lot of moving parts that one should be familiar with before operation. When I first opened the manual, I was slightly intimidated when I saw all the parts labeled. But after reading the manual once, the machine is actually a breeze to operate. It is easy to clean and the settings are very self-explanatory. I am not mechanically inclined so that was also a huge plus for me.

I normally do not spend this amount of money on a coffee machine but after my "2 pot return" fiasco, I splurged on this machine with fingers crossed and am so glad I did!! I signed up for an account with Breville just to write this review which is very rare for me. I am now one very satisfied customer and extremely happy with this purchase.

To Strong

"Our problem is the amount of coffee bean it grounds and then the coffee is so strong you can hardly able to drink it.
We have tried using ground coffee and it is better but I like a fresh grind coffee verses a pre grind that is why I bought this one. We have also put different amount of beans and then the grinder keeps grinding with no beans why do that having to add new beans every day with that large container to hold the beans. the other thing we did is use a paper filter it did help with the bitters.
We did call Breville and they timed the grind time which is one minute and she said that is what is suppose to do. Well that is a half a min to long.. Very disappointed..
And such a expensive item to have something so bad I guess I will go back to Cuisinart which I was tired of and wanted something higher end..."

High End Price, Low End Quality and Shipping

"My first you brew last about 40 days and then went into the dreaded "001". I assumed I had waited long enough to purchase this product where the kinks had been worked out. I was wrong. While it does make a great cup of coffee 40 days of actual functioning time is less than poor.

Support was obviously used to returning these and took mine back in the first 10 minutes of my call. I shipped the untii back the next day. The unit had worked just long enough for me to throw out the box so I had to pay Pak Mail $25 to pack it up and Breville paid the shipping.

Then I was really floored. I am already over $300 into a coffee maker that I no longer have or can use and Breville has the nerve to ship the new unit back to me via Fed Ex ground from California to the East Coast. They did not even offer to ask e to pay for expedited shipping. I am now paying more for crappy DD coffee than I would have for 3 day shipping. This over the next 10 days while I wait for the thing to arrive.

I know things break but high end companies should have more sense. My major appliances are of the high end variety and I never had to wait more than 3 days for a fix."

You Brew Is A Techno Wonder!

"Breville makes awesome gear and the YouBrew is no exception. I spent over two hours tonight with one at Williams-Sonoma in Emeryville considering one before purchase and the team there let me put it through the paces. I noticed immediately that the grind was large.....almost as if it were meant for French Press. The sales associate told me that was indication it needed to be cleaned and I convinced her to let me clean the machine thouroughly. On the second run it did grind the whole bean much finer. Yes, the grinder is loud but that is what I expect from a Burr Grinder so no issue there. The programmable features are nice and the preheat feature is even nicer. I like the countdown feature as it brews.

Upon completion of the brew cycle, I poured myself a cup and it was very good and strong. Some complain that it is too strong but you can vary the strength as well. The taste of the coffee was very clean and did not leave any aftertaste in my mouth. All of the Breville peripherals are well labeled.

The reason I WILL purchase this piece of gear at Williams-Sonoma is because of their amazing return policy. I love the store and the staff is great and they offer a no question return as long as you bring a receipt.

Breville is an innovator in the food appliance biz. This is also my first Breville coffee maker purchase and is the PRECURSOR to me making a larger investment in the newer Breville ORACLE Espresso maker.

Cleaning the machine was no problem and is way less problematic versus Cuisinart coffee makers. Taking out the modular components to clean was easy and you can even use a small vacuum to clean out the bean hopper if you want to insure all coffee grounds are out.

As in all coffee makers, one should run it through a monthly cleaning cycle to insure optimum flavor and coffee purity."

It's All About Taste

"I wouldn't buy a $20 coffee maker for the same reason I avoid buying coffee from convenience stores: It's all about the FLAVOR. If it tastes bad, I'm not going to drink it.

With that said the You Brew 600 is off the charts - excellent. We first used it by brewing in to the carafe. The coffee was good, tended to be strong but the settings managed the brewing to our tastes with no problem. We use Dean's Beans and Ithaca Coffee Company beans. The carafe keeps the coffee hot for a long time and the complaints about problems pouring out the last "cups" of coffee are exaggerated, what's left is about 1 tablespoon.

But if you are buying a coffee maker for flavor, live on the wild side and try using this coffee maker by the cup. Don't worry, it provides three cup sizes with three sub-settings per cup so you can brew a very large cup of coffee.

In the by-the-cup mode the YouBrew offers you a "richness" setting in addition to the "strength" setting. The "richness" setting enables a steeping time which greatly improves the character (not strength) of the coffee being brewed, and is not possible when brewing by carafe. It provides a logarithmic shift in flavor. We are now hooked on by-the-cup brewing, and enjoy coffee better than any we can buy - anywhere.

Cleaning the hopper is easy compared to our previous machine, the Cuisinart Brew Central which was a pain, and all in all the YouBrew 600 has been problem free from day one. I highly recommend it. "

Good coffee machine

"The thing about reviews is that the higher the cost of the item purchased, the more likely the buyer is going to write a bad review if unsatisfied, and this coffee machine is pretty nifty priced item. Youbrew has a quiet grinder and most importantly makes the best tasting cup of coffee this side of espresso. Gadgets and controls be damned, I just want a damn good tasting cup of coffee and this thing provides me with it. "

My Experience

"I almost didn't purchase this coffee maker after reading all of the reviews online. Fortunately, the salesperson at the store told me it would be no problem returning the coffee maker if I wasn't completely satisfied. I'm very glad I made the purchase.
This is an excellent coffee maker. I love the taste of the coffee and the machine is relatively easy to use. Some people have mentioned the temperature of the coffee. I find the temperature to be fine. If you preheat the carafe, the coffee is even hotter. For me it's only possible to preheat on the weekends as during the week I set the timer to have the coffee waiting for me when I wake up. It would be nice if there was a way to heat the carafe as the coffee brews. I would be just as happy if the machine didn't have the single cup brewing but provided a heating plate for the thermal carafe.
This machine doesn't seem to be practical as a single cup brewer if you want more than one cup due to the required clean up between brewing. The clean up isn't difficult but does require a few parts to be completely cleaned and dried. I formerly owned a similar Cuisinart machine and the clean up process is similar.
This machine has the quietest grinder I've ever heard. A few people have mentioned the noise but compared to other coffee machines or stand alone grinders this one is much better.
Some reviewers have mentioned problems with their machines. The only issues I've had so far are user errors. Since the coffee bean hopper is a smoked plastic container, it can be difficult to see the level of beans. On two occasions I've gotten up in the morning and found I have a pot of hot water. Would prefer a clear hopper. Now I am trying to get myself into the habit of refilling the hopper every time I clean the machine.
All in all this is an excellent coffee maker. As with everything it has a few quirks that require getting accustomed to but given the great coffee I get in return I am willing to live with the quirks. "

fresh ground and figures out how much to grind

"This is pretty much the best coffee maker on the market. no more K cups and fresh grind coffee each morning. Well made, keeps coffee hot for hours. Grinder Is loud but what grinder is not. After you figure out how you like your coffee settings its easy to changes Single cup brew/strength options. Using the pot, grind has strength but it grinds what is needed for number of cups.
I did have a unit problem and I must say This company shipped new product and I just returned in same box. with no problem. So great customer service if it is needed.
I am sure you can find complaints as few products are perfect. But I have none and the most important thing is it brews a great cup of coffee"

Just wish it...

"Great coffee maker...design and operation but I do wish I could separate the grind time from the brew time. I prefer freshly ground coffee but I have a bedroom off my kitchen with family visiting often. It would be nice to pre-grind the coffee at night and have it in the basket so that I only have to brew in the morning. It also makes noise when loading Pre-Ground coffee. It is however a lot quieter than my old coffee maker while brewing. Five stars if you provided this kind of control over the grind and load cycle."
