the Barista Express™

With conical burr grinder & dose control

A barista will quickly tell you that the most important ingredient to deliver an amazing espresso is to use fresh beans and to grind them as close to the time of use as possible. Actually, it's best to limit the time between grinding and extraction to seconds, not minutes. That's why we've built a grinder into the Barista Express™ espresso machine.

The in-built conical burr grinder allows you to grind only what you need directly into the portafilter. It's fully adjustable in grind size and dose, so you can tweak to taste. The patented Razor™ dosing tool trims the puck for consistent extraction, while PID digital temperature control delivers accurate water temperature throughout the extraction.

With a dedicated hot water outlet, impressive steam pressure and dual and single wall filters, you'll move from novice to barista in no time at all.

First impressions

"Beautiful Machine. Pleasing to the eye and fits weill with my kitchen.
Set up was easy. Started with cheap coffee beans (Not expresso, 8 oçlock) and did not get good results. Bought Starbucks fresh expresso whole beans at grocery store and came out perfect (grind, pressure, etc)
On my 3rd try made some decaf expresso I had (Bustelo) that was already grounded and came out well using the double wall filter. It had been around for awhile. Frothed the milk to perfection for a nice decaf capuccino.
So far I love it. Getting the right, fresh beans make all the difference. I live in Miami so outside of starbucks and dunkin donuts might be hard to find a local coffee shop with outstanding beans, although I will check out the local Cuban cafes to see if the sell fresh beans.
I realize its only the first day, but so far so happy with my Barista express."

Horrible durability

"There is always a good reason when something is cheaper than its rivals. $600 for a combo grinder and espresso machine that has a built-in PID is definitely a steal. BUT you are really paying much more for its horrible durability, especially, combined with lack of responsibility from Breville. Initially, the grinder gave me a good range of fine coffee for my espresso and the espresso machine brewed perfect shots of espresso. In less than 6 months the grinder started to slip and the grind size became significantly course despite regular cleaning and maintenance. I followed instructions of the manual and the technician on the phone to clean the whole burr groups; however, I still do not get a fine grind unless I set it at the finest and even then it is not always consistent. The espresso machine still works fine. I called Breville again and they mentioned that my grinder needs to be serviced but they voided my warranty since I had not purchased the machine from their “AUTHORIZED RETAILER”. Basically, they are not taking responsibility for a machine that malfunctions only after less than 6 months. I already spent enough for my espresso equipment for now so I need to wait longer for an upgrade which is certainly NOT a Breville. My next purchase is definitely going to be from a company with a better durability and responsibility "

Feedback re Barista Expres

"Just a couple suggestions re the instruction manual for the Barista express. First off I like the machine and it's functionality. I also love the coffee (really Americano). I am now on my 3rd machine in the second year of ownership as the first two machines began to make a loud chattering noise when I would press the brew "cup" button. I would guess that the noise was the electric solenoid valve but leave that analysis to the Breville folks. They were very good about replacing my machine but have indicated that no more warranty replacements for me which brings me to the reason for my review:
The manual says to clean the machine by inserting the "1 CUP filter basket into the portafilter followed by the supplied cleaning disc, followed by 1 cleaning tablet" when the "clean me" light comes on which I have done religiously. What I learned in talking to the rep with Breville was that I was supposed to be using the 1 cup DOUBLE WALL BASKET. The manual only states the 1 cup filter basket and does not specify which one. So possibly my machine was not being properly cleaned and that resulted in the failures? Additionally the manual in the decalcifying instruction section item # 7 specifically states "If any mixture remains in the water tank, press and hold the 1 CUP button to commence a manual pour. Release the button once the tank is empty and nothing runs through the group head." If one reads on, there is a warning that the water tank should never be completely emptied during decalcifying. Which is it? Manual needs to be corrected/clarified on these 2 points as they appear to be critical to machine maintenance. "

Exceeds expectations!

"Breville has done a great job designing the BES870XL. It's easy to use with the built in automation but once you get used to the machine you can customize the coffee different ways to your taste. I use mine 3 - 4 days a week for 3 - 4 coffees a day for our family.

When I first bought the machine I was using the last of some very high quality pre ground coffee. I was not getting the results I wanted so I started using whole beans in the grinder.

The built in grinder is really effective and is not a bell or whistle. I use regular dark roast coffee from the market and the BES870XL makes it taste like the finest Italian Espresso brands. It grinds the coffee very finely, on demand, everytime, which really increases the quality and consistency of drinks. I will never grind coffee at the market or buy ground coffee again.

When you think about the overall quality and effectiveness of the machine it easily justifies the price. Don't struggle with lesser espresso machines and separate lower quality grinders that will really cost more in the end.

Thanks Breville!"

Waste of Money

"I love my espresso so I purchased this $599.00 Barista, it was great for a couple of months and it stopped grinding beans. After cleaning the machine still did not work. The company sent me another machine and after 2 months stopped grinding beans again. It is very frustrating. The company is trying to make excuses like it's my beans. I am a espresso snob and do purchase very good beans like Lilly and Mocha Doro so there is not way it's the beans. I am the only one that uses the machine 2 times a day so this should work for more then a couple of months.

I would suggest you look for another machine and not waste you money"

Love the Barista Express

"I have had an older model of this for about 5 years now and I could not be more pleased. Has worked perfectly without missing a beat. I use mine about 3-4 days a week making 2 drinks a day sometimes 3. It makes wonderful espresso and beautiful froth. If I have to replace it, I will purchase the same one."

Love this espresso maker!

"I absolutely LOVE my Breville BES870... it makes a nice, hot, "fluffy" latte every time. The burr grinder is wonderful, and I especially love that it grinds just as much as I want with the press of a button (i.e. pusing the portafilter in to turn it off and on).

Also, my service from Breville was exceptional.

Thank you, Breville!! "

Fantastic Product

"After 10 years with a Francis Francis X5 which I typically used with Illy ESE pods, my little blue machine sadly passed away. I loved it so. It made a good espressos for me every morning. RIP little guy.

However, after replacing it with the Barista Express, I now realize how inferior my espressos have been for the past decade. Yes, I've had many a great espresso at coffee shops, so it's not like I didn't know what great espresso tastes like. However, I never dreamed such perfection was available at home. I'm here to tell you that it is.

First, the quality of this machine is great. I'm a product snob, and the build quality, presence, and functionality of this machine does not disappoint.

Second, It is easy to use. I had no experience grinding, tamping, etc., prior to owning this machine. Simply insert fresh, high-quality beans, follow the directions, and out comes some of the finest espresso you will ever drink.

Lastly, in my opinion the grinder and espresso machine are relatively quiet. I don't believe grinding beans can ever be a whisper quiet function, but in my opinion this machine is not very loud. I was concerned that the grinder would wake up my wife and baby every day, but in week one of operation, everyone has slept peacefully as I have cranked out 2-3 espressos each morning."

Great Expresso from a Great Machine

"I received the BES870XL for a Christmas present in 2013. I was really excited, but when I tried the machine, it didn't work. I'm a coffee snob, and have had various models over the years, I know how to run an expresso machine, but I couldn't get the pressure gauge to function. I tried changing the grind, the tamping pressure, the amount of grounds, but nothing fixed the problem, so I exchanged the machine. The second machine behaved the same way, so I figured it was an inferior product. After reading multiple bad reviews, I was convinced that it was the product. The posts from Breville support listed the proper steps, and it kept stressing fresh beans. I decided to purchase beans freshly roasted from a local coffee vendor instead of from the big chain grocery store. Presto…the machine immediately registered pressure. After a little experimenting with grind and tamping pressure, I started producing expresso that was as good as the large coffee chain. I have now had the machine for 10 months and I love it. I had intended to post a review to offset the bad reviews, but never got around to it. This morning after my delicious latte, I decided the time was long over due. I can't over stress that you use Fresh expresso beans, properly roasted, if you start with that, and patiently develop your barista skills, you'll soon be producing great expresso. Thanks a lot Breville, for great machine. "
