the Barista Express™

With conical burr grinder & dose control

A barista will quickly tell you that the most important ingredient to deliver an amazing espresso is to use fresh beans and to grind them as close to the time of use as possible. Actually, it's best to limit the time between grinding and extraction to seconds, not minutes. That's why we've built a grinder into the Barista Express™ espresso machine.

The in-built conical burr grinder allows you to grind only what you need directly into the portafilter. It's fully adjustable in grind size and dose, so you can tweak to taste. The patented Razor™ dosing tool trims the puck for consistent extraction, while PID digital temperature control delivers accurate water temperature throughout the extraction.

With a dedicated hot water outlet, impressive steam pressure and dual and single wall filters, you'll move from novice to barista in no time at all.

Very Happy W/Barista Express

" Have had this machine for over a year and use it at least once a day and often several times a day. It is dependable, easy to use and produces a fine coffee. Particularly like the fact that many parts are replaceable should the need arise. There was a short learning period to get the amount of coffee and fineness of grind right. Once that was accomplished the machine always produces a terrific drink! If you're in the market for an affordable, reliable espresso maker, I'd highly recommend this one. The one improvement I'd like to see is a "grind catcher" to collect the excess coffee as it comes from the grinder into the portafilter. I use a small plate, but it does seem like a design flaw."

Good Machine

"I love this machine. Had never made espresso before, so it took a little practice to get a good crema, and, of course, it changes by bean, but now I have great coffee any time I wish! My only complaint, if you could call it that, is that the bean hopper is not big enough to take a whole pound of beans 'cause I'm constantly refilling it - yes, we drink that much coffee. It did not take us long to recoup the price of the machine by not having to buy at a coffee shop, and, really, I much prefer my own lattes now.

great latte

"Upgraded our espresso machine to the Barista Express. The first machine wasn't working properly: grinder getting clogged, espresso grinds too wet, machine too loud. BUT, we exchanged it for another machine and I'm glad we did. This machine is just fantastic for the price point. Really enjoy the grind into portafilter function and machine texturizes really well. Still discovering the perfect grind size and amount, but overall this makes a fantastic latte. Almost created a tulip!"

Poor quality

"I had this product for less than a year. When it was new, the machine worked great and produced great tasting coffee. After some time I stopped produce an much steam during frothing and a lot less pressure for extraction. Today it won't grind my coffee beans. Sounds like a broken internal gear. I'm not sold on their long term durability or quality. Seems like a throw away machine. Breville."

Look no further

"I have been a member of a couple coffee forums for over two years. I learned LOTS from reading those forums even though they focus on set ups that run well in excess of $1,500. I waffled around from machine to machine trying to set my sights on one. They were always too expensive. The Barista Express is 1/3 the cost of a middle of the road machine from other vendors. I have been using the Barista Express for three months. It does a GREAT job! Grinder and espresso maker in one without any issues. It definitely grinds small enough for espresso. I make delicious espresso's, cappa's, and latte's. Always use fresh beans. If the bean roast is over three weeks old, use it in your drip coffee maker. That advice holds for any espresso machine. You have to enjoy grinding and tamping to truly appreciate this particular machine. The machine does not need recovery time. I can make latte after latte until the water runs out. You would not use it in a restaurant but for home use its fast enough. Wonderful machine for beginner or experienced. I highly recommend it. The more you use it the better you get. Way to go Breville!"

Great Value Great Price

"I have had my machine for about a year and I can say I am truly happy with the purchase. Given I have had the pleasure of working with 30k machines in the industry, I was worried this machine would not live up to my standards. If using high quality, fresh espresso that isn't too oily, this machine produces a great shot with decent creme. The foaming ability is great for what you pay for. I can get decent foam even with soy milk, but you will be hard pressed to produce beautiful latte art with the foam from this machine.

It's super easy to maintain and clean. The dry puck feature is fantastic for home use. No need for a knock box or running espresso grinds down the disposal. Makes it easy for composting as well.

All and all, I don't think there is a better machine/grinder out there in this price range. It's a great machine for beginners and experienced barista's alike. "

Like having my favorite coffee shops in my own home!

"After playing around with this for the past month I can truly say I am very happy with this machine. It took a few times before I discovered the perfect grind and dose amount, but once I got it the results were amazing. You do have to change it up a bit when you are using different coffee beans, but once you master the settings your in for a real treat. I have discovered it is best if you buy small amounts of coffee beans and use them within ten days for optimum taste and creme. This machine won the 2013 Award for best new consumer product by the Specialty Coffee Association of America. This semi automatic machine combines both brewing and grinding it one unit, and has some features you will only find on higher level professional machines. Those features are PID temperature control for extremely accurate brew water which is important for consistent shots (adjustable by 4 degrees each way up or down), a dry puck feature, and a purge system which releases excess steam in the drip tray so coffee is not burnt by residual steam in the boiler. This Barista Express has everything you need except the coffee beans and water to get you started. It has a beautiful stainless steel finish. My friend worked at starbucks and a few other high end coffee shops so for this to impress him that says a lot. The best thing to me is being able to make those espressos, cappuccinos, Lattes, Macchiatos, Americanos, Ristrettos, hot chocolates, or teas in your own home without having to go out and pay an arm and a leg for a good one. With some experimentation with some syrups, coffee beans and or other flavorings you are sure to find the perfect coffee drink for yourself. I will put up a video review in the next few weeks showing how easy it is to make a drink.

This Breville model comes with the following accessories included:

Patented Razor(tm) dose trimming tool
54mm stainless steel portafilter
Single wall filter baskets (1 & 2 cup)
Dual wall filter baskets (1 & 2 cup)
Coffee scoop
Integrated tamper
Stainless steel milk jug
Cleaning disc and tablets
Cleaning brush, tool and Allen key
Water filter holder and a carbon resin water filter"

Excellet. Easy to use. Easy to clean!!!!

"This Barista Express is the best. I am so happy with it. I can make the best lattes in no time and the best part is that it is really easy to use and clean. I bought it a month ago and every time I am drinking my coffee I am happier with my purchase. Since I bought it I have not spend a penny in any coffee place. The quality, efficiency and convenience of the product is outstanding"

The real deal

"After years of using an old Starbucks Barista machine that I thought was decent, I got this and am simply wowed. Living in LA, I go to many wonderful coffee places (Urth, Intelligentsia, Handsome, etc). I always thought it was their amazing coffee roasting and their gazillion dollar machines that made their drinks so tasty. But with this gizmo mine are every bit as good as theirs now (of course, using the great roasted beans bought from these places...). With a bit of initial and error getting the settings just right it produces great drinks, and even the ones made during the trial and error were pretty darned good... And, the steam is quick, hot and powerful so making steamed milk and cappuccino froth just like the big boys. Even soy milk comes out incredibly textured. My old machine never came close to this. I tried a Jura automatic everything first at twice the price and was not wowed in the results and figured that the thingamajig was just destined to break... Got this and feel it's a great bargain in comparison. Anyone who craves excellent coffee and likes making it will love it. Everything is designed well, steel all around rather than plastic, looks good and is not a huge contraption that takes over the counter.

One great addition would be a removable tray to place under the portafilter when filling from the grinder to capture the overflow that could be collected over a few fillings and then be easily poured into the portafilter for another shot. After half a dozen fillings or so there is plenty of overflow to make another shot or two. We use a little plate, but a designed gizmo that matches the machine and has a funnel flow of sorts to empty into the portafilter would be ideal. I talked to Breville customer support before buying this to know what the differences were from this one and the 860 it replaced. They said they listened to customers suggestions and incorporated many of them into the new design. When the 880 comes out with my tray idea I'll look forward to receiving one for free...:)

Seriously, Breville, you guys really rock with this machine. I don't know what the Speciality Coffee Association of America is all about, and perhaps it is just some trade group that really means nothing for consumers, but I give the 870XL my personal Joe Award which is all that matters to me!"
