Good Machine but with a few problems

"I have used this machine for a year now. This unit produces a generally consistent loaf of white bread for us, time after time. The bread comes out browned evenly on all sides, following the basic bread recipe in its manual. The displays are easy to read and use. As reported the outside does get hot during baking but this is not a problem for us as we have no children or 4 footed animals in our house that might get burned. Unlike some other reports we so far have not had issues with the pan coating coming off and the bread does slide out without sticking to the sides of the pan when done. However I always spray the bottom and the paddle with pan release spray each time I use the machine. Bread and dough does tend to stick to the paddle however and can be difficult to remove if the unit is hot from baking until it cools. I have used the dough settings successfully for sweet dough, bagels, english muffins, challah, and sourdough bread successfully.

The one big issue I have is with the paddle. Aside from sticking to dough or baked bread, dough tend to get trapped inside the mechanism of the collapsing paddle. I find that the only way to clean it properly is to unscrew the set screw holding the paddle to its shaft using an allen wrench, which the Breville does not provide. Once you remove the paddle from the shaft you are left with a shaft with gummy or dirty baked on bread dough surrounding the shaft which is easily removed with soap, water, and a toothpick. I find I have to clean the shaft this way with each bread cycle in order for the paddle to rotate freely on the shaft. As such I recommend that the first thing you do if you buy this machine is to take a trip to the hardware store with paddle in hand and buy an inexpensive hex wrench that will fit the set screw. I have informed Breville about this issue but they do not seem to care about it.

The other minor issue with it is that if you rotate the paddle shaft after removing the bread pan from the unit you may have an issue putting it in properly. This is easily remedied by hand turning the paddle shaft to aligning properly fit into the turning mechanism in the bottom of the machine. This is easily done and the position is not really critical.

All in all I am very pleased with the machine and the bread it makes aside from these somewhat minor inconveniences. Overall I would recommend this product. "

Consistent and good

"I have had my machine for over 2 years. I grind my own wheat from berries using a Vita-Mix. It does what it is supposed to do very well. I have made over 50 loaves of various recopies, all with good results. As a bread maker, one must know the gluten content of the flour(s) being used and add gluten as necessary. I have not created a custom bread setting because the available settings work well at my altitude (980'). As an older adult with some hearing loss, I would prefer that the buzzer at the end of the bake cycle be a little louder.... What did you say? I look forward to many years of creative bread making with this machine. Like their toaster and espresso machine, it is very well thought out and well built."

c ya later Panera

"I just got my new bread machine last night and made my first loaf. WOW, what a difference from my last basic bread maker. Very easy and intuitive to use. Basic white loaf turned out MUCH better than with last machine. I've been wanting to upgrade to Breville for quite some time and very happy with the switch. My previous machine still worked but never wowed me. Even the kneading process impressed me. Breville is much more thorough when kneading the dough and I was seriously blown away when I discovered it went in reverse. Dual direction kneading! COOL!!! I've researched the Breville what I thought was extensively and did not know of this feature. I can't speak to the longevity as this is day 1 but I'm very impressed thus far. Looking forward to testing my all time favorite sourdough Italian Pagnotta on the crusty bread setting."

"I bought this bread maker for my wife who wanted to start making homemade bread again--we'd had a bread maker many years before but it broke (different brand). We've had it for 3 weeks and we have had fresh bread continuously since then. It is so easy and makes superior bread for a bread maker (way better than the old one we had). We've played around with the options and have found the settings we like best and have worked our way through the bread recipes. The bread toasts up amazingly, too. We quite literally have not bought bread since we got this. I, nor my wife, cannot say enough good things about this...I mean, I don't usually post reviews of products, good or bad, but this one is so good it deserves it. "

Outstanding Machine

"My wife bought me this machine for Christmas 2013. I do most of the cooking in the house and we wanted to go without processed foods since my wife has many food intolerances.
I use this machine at least twice a week. I mainly make gluten-free bread. Let me tell you that this thing is awesome. My wife and I love it!!
I'm a bit of a gadget guy, which means the controls are right up my alley. The digital screen is very easy to navigate and to read. Each control has a nice, positive action to it so you know when you've pressed or turned it.
I really like the compartment in the lid where you can put nuts or fruit (or whatever). It drops the contents at the right time of the mixing cycle. Since I'm a gadget guy, I'm trying to figure out how the machine opens the compartment since there are no wires. Sorry, I digress...
The folding mixing attachment that goes in the pan is really cool too. Sometimes it stays in the bread; sometimes it stays in the pan. Either way, it does minimal damage to the loaf when removing the bread from the pan.
What it boils down to, is we do not buy any more processed food. The bread is awesome and my wife is doing great!!!"

Love the Machine!

"We purchased this bread machine in December 2012. We absolutely LOVE it!! We make bread, pizza dough, ketchup...would like to try making rolls one of these days. The ONLY thing I don't like about the machine is the collapsible paddle. In less than 14 months, two of them have stopped working!! No amount of strength can get them to turn. We clean them throughly after every use, being very careful to remove all dough or baked on bread...which is not an easy task due to the poor design of the paddle. The only reason I can't give this machine 5 stars is due to the paddle...please fix the design. "

Love it!

"I purchased my Bread Maker shortly after Christmas. I no longer buy bread or rolls from the store. I make my bread fresh everyday. My favorite is bruschetta bread. I make all my own dough as well. I even dropped my bread machine from the counter to the floor, because I had it too close to the end. I was afraid it wouldn't work, but it did! I wouldn't recommend dropping it, but this is a great machine. I am now interested in several of your other products. I never heard of Breville, but I am sold on this manufacturere."

whole wheat pre-heat stage

"I set my brand new "custom loaf" to the whole wheat setting. There is a pre-heat stage when using whole wheat. After putting all my ingredients , pushing the start button, and waiting for 30 minutes, with nothing happening( i felt the heating elements, nothing), i began to wonder what was up. The timer continued to count down, the progress scale kept blinking "pre heat", still nothing. I called customer support, they walked me through the seeings. Nothing changed. told me to take it back to the store and exchange it. OK, did so. brought the new one home. added my new batch of ingredients, set up for whole wheat, crust level high, 1.5lb loaf. Nothing!!!!! called customer support again, they were amazed. walked me through the setting again. Nothing changed. Sent me a Fedex label to return it for a new one. Well, I think not... Intend on returning it to the store for a refund and sticking with my Viking 1000 watt stand mixer. never fails this unit.....
if anyone has any thoughts on this problem, post it, i will certainly try anything....."

" As bread maker this machine does just fine but if you want to do custom programs to make dough, taking full advantage of things like preheat you are out of luck.

I would have thought a machine this expensive would have full program capabilities but I am sad to say it does not.

I had a less than $60 Sunbeam that equaled this bread machine in many ways.
