the Barista Express™

With conical burr grinder & dose control

A barista will quickly tell you that the most important ingredient to deliver an amazing espresso is to use fresh beans and to grind them as close to the time of use as possible. Actually, it's best to limit the time between grinding and extraction to seconds, not minutes. That's why we've built a grinder into the Barista Express™ espresso machine.

The in-built conical burr grinder allows you to grind only what you need directly into the portafilter. It's fully adjustable in grind size and dose, so you can tweak to taste. The patented Razor™ dosing tool trims the puck for consistent extraction, while PID digital temperature control delivers accurate water temperature throughout the extraction.

With a dedicated hot water outlet, impressive steam pressure and dual and single wall filters, you'll move from novice to barista in no time at all.

Great Expresso from a Great Machine

"I received the BES870XL for a Christmas present in 2013. I was really excited, but when I tried the machine, it didn't work. I'm a coffee snob, and have had various models over the years, I know how to run an expresso machine, but I couldn't get the pressure gauge to function. I tried changing the grind, the tamping pressure, the amount of grounds, but nothing fixed the problem, so I exchanged the machine. The second machine behaved the same way, so I figured it was an inferior product. After reading multiple bad reviews, I was convinced that it was the product. The posts from Breville support listed the proper steps, and it kept stressing fresh beans. I decided to purchase beans freshly roasted from a local coffee vendor instead of from the big chain grocery store. Presto…the machine immediately registered pressure. After a little experimenting with grind and tamping pressure, I started producing expresso that was as good as the large coffee chain. I have now had the machine for 10 months and I love it. I had intended to post a review to offset the bad reviews, but never got around to it. This morning after my delicious latte, I decided the time was long over due. I can't over stress that you use Fresh expresso beans, properly roasted, if you start with that, and patiently develop your barista skills, you'll soon be producing great expresso. Thanks a lot Breville, for great machine. "

makes great espresso

"I am very pleased with the ease of operation and the flexibility the programming adds. The machine heats up quickly, its easy to clean and makes the best espresso. I like the way the grind and amount of dosage is easily adjusted. The water tank is easy to fill and has a large capacity. The steam wand is maneuverable and easy to clean. This is our third Brevile appliance and every one of them works to perfection.
The espresso machine is a superb value! "

Almost a year - Follow Up

"My last review was early on in owning this product. At that time I loved it. It's been almost a year now. I use the machine 4 days out of 7. When I use it I'll make two drinks twice that day. The machine has functioned flawlessly!. No issues, problems, or complaints. I still love it! Should it ever die I will try to fix it or replace it with the SAME model. There really is one issue. My latte art stinks, but that ones on me. "

Simple Perfection

"The machine is simple perfection. Easy to use and many individual adjustments make it a joy to play barista now that I have retired from that position at THE famous national coffeehouse. Partnering the unit with amazing espresso bean products has reignited my passion in producing and consuming fine lattes and cappuccinos for myself, my wife who surprised me with this machine, and my friends. As said by others, outside of the one reviewer who apparently had problems, the machine does everything that I was accustomed to with the more expensive coffeehouse units. "

Exceeded Expectations

"Don't have much to add beyond what has already been said by the other five-star reviews. I really wanted a fully automatic machine for many years but the cost and maintenance held me back from buying one. I decided to try the 870XL based on reviews and after about four months of use, I'm very happy with it. It's fun to use because of the control I have over the various drink types and it is amazingly easy to clean. The main learning curve I had to work out is getting the tamping process figured out to get a consistent pressure. My solution is to wobble the tamper around the portafilter edges, not just press and twist straight down at first, and then finish tamping by pressing straight down and twisting. My theory is that when I was having low pressure experiences, the water was finding a path down the sides. With my refined tamping process, I'm getting consistent, upper-third gray zone pressure. Overall, for me a great product."

Very Happy W/Barista Express

" Have had this machine for over a year and use it at least once a day and often several times a day. It is dependable, easy to use and produces a fine coffee. Particularly like the fact that many parts are replaceable should the need arise. There was a short learning period to get the amount of coffee and fineness of grind right. Once that was accomplished the machine always produces a terrific drink! If you're in the market for an affordable, reliable espresso maker, I'd highly recommend this one. The one improvement I'd like to see is a "grind catcher" to collect the excess coffee as it comes from the grinder into the portafilter. I use a small plate, but it does seem like a design flaw."

Good Machine

"I love this machine. Had never made espresso before, so it took a little practice to get a good crema, and, of course, it changes by bean, but now I have great coffee any time I wish! My only complaint, if you could call it that, is that the bean hopper is not big enough to take a whole pound of beans 'cause I'm constantly refilling it - yes, we drink that much coffee. It did not take us long to recoup the price of the machine by not having to buy at a coffee shop, and, really, I much prefer my own lattes now.

great latte

"Upgraded our espresso machine to the Barista Express. The first machine wasn't working properly: grinder getting clogged, espresso grinds too wet, machine too loud. BUT, we exchanged it for another machine and I'm glad we did. This machine is just fantastic for the price point. Really enjoy the grind into portafilter function and machine texturizes really well. Still discovering the perfect grind size and amount, but overall this makes a fantastic latte. Almost created a tulip!"

Poor quality

"I had this product for less than a year. When it was new, the machine worked great and produced great tasting coffee. After some time I stopped produce an much steam during frothing and a lot less pressure for extraction. Today it won't grind my coffee beans. Sounds like a broken internal gear. I'm not sold on their long term durability or quality. Seems like a throw away machine. Breville."

Look no further

"I have been a member of a couple coffee forums for over two years. I learned LOTS from reading those forums even though they focus on set ups that run well in excess of $1,500. I waffled around from machine to machine trying to set my sights on one. They were always too expensive. The Barista Express is 1/3 the cost of a middle of the road machine from other vendors. I have been using the Barista Express for three months. It does a GREAT job! Grinder and espresso maker in one without any issues. It definitely grinds small enough for espresso. I make delicious espresso's, cappa's, and latte's. Always use fresh beans. If the bean roast is over three weeks old, use it in your drip coffee maker. That advice holds for any espresso machine. You have to enjoy grinding and tamping to truly appreciate this particular machine. The machine does not need recovery time. I can make latte after latte until the water runs out. You would not use it in a restaurant but for home use its fast enough. Wonderful machine for beginner or experienced. I highly recommend it. The more you use it the better you get. Way to go Breville!"
