Awesome machine, possibly overly complex instruction manual

"I am not a seasoned coffeemaker user - this is my first grinder, and my first fancy machine. I started reading the instruction manual at about noon on Sunday, and by 10 o'clock that night finally felt competent enough to attempt to use it.

I'm not kidding - the manual is incredibly explicit and even a little strident. For a coffee maker this expensive, it makes sense that you would want to use and clean it with care. On the other hand, a key point in the instructions for setting the timer was missing, and that was disappointing. Ending up with six cups of coffee at 10:30 p.m. wasn't the end of the world (and you better believe we refrigerated it for iced coffee the next day), but that one little error seems uncharacteristic.

I agree with the other reviewers: the design of the carafe is terrible. Certainly don't use it to fill the water tank - you'll be very frustrated and will wind up wasting a lot of water. Filtered water, too. And then the wasted coffee is tragic, especially when the coffee that emerges from this machine is truly amazing.

My final comment is that you're advised to run warm water into the carafe prior to brewing your coffee. My problem with this is that because I program my machine to start while I'm still asleep, I can't do that. Is it truly necessary? Why not just make a carafe that keeps the coffee warmer, if that's the issue? For the money you pay for this (beautiful) machine, making getting that carafe right doesn't seem like rocket science.

All that said, I am confident that this well-made coffeemaker, if I use and maintain it as instructed, will last me forever. I look forward to many years of delicious coffee. "

Did Not Like the Carafe

"I bought the You Brew in November 2011 when it first came out. I mostly used the one cup feature but occasionally used the carafe, especially when having guests for dinner. Although I really loved the machine, the carafe was a pain. It was difficult to clean and almost impossible to dry the inside of it. What was worse was trying to pour coffee out of the carafe. Terrible! Today I finally gave up and bought the new You Brew with the glass carafe. That carafe works beautifully so I am happy about that in spite of having to spend so much money. The coffee the new machine makes seems to be stronger even on the lowest setting and I don't like truly strong coffee. It's easy to fix since I just add more half and half. Breville does for the most part make really great products, and I have a lot of them. They should have offered a choice at the beginning of either a thermal carafe or a glass carafe, but I assume they only went the glass route when they discovered a lot of people didn't like the thermal carafe. I hope I can sell my thermal version. "

No Coffee Comes Out

"I bought this unit in late July 2012, and used it until Aug 29, 2012. It worked fine. Love the single cup feature and the ability to custom blend the coffee until I found perfection.

However, on Aug 29, it stopped working. No water would come out. I tried all the troubleshooting, and called for support. The coffee maker was exchanged very quickly. Now I have the new one, and will have to remember what my custom brew settings were. Not a problem, I will have fun finding them again.

One thing I did notice with my first unit was that about 70% of the time, I did not get a full cup of coffee. Then other times it would be full to the brim. I am using paper filters, maybe they are just too tight. Don't know. I will see if my new one has same issue.

This is the best grind and brew coffee maker I have ever owned, and I would recommend it to anyone that likes freshly ground coffee.

Splash, splash, splash!

"I love this brewer. I'm very picky about my coffee. I have a subscription for beans from a small local roaster who ships green beans in person all over the coffee world, and the quality of drink this brewer produces is up to the quality of those beans.
Now for the downside;
The last two cups in the carafe won't pour correctly. It doesn't pour in a stream like it should, but splashes and dribbles out making it near impossible to fill my thermos so I can take it to work. The coffee at work is pretty bad. Even pouring a mug is problematic.
I'm trying to find a suitable non-thermal carafe, but not having much luck.
I give it a five for the brew and one for the carafe, which averages at three.

High End Coffee Maker

"I bought the YouBrew right after returning a new Cuisinart Grind & Brew (not hot & not good tasting compared to the two previous Cuisinart makers that I have had over 9 years). I noticed that something was not right on day 2. It seems that the chute disk was not fully opening causing the grinder not to push out the ground beans. I emailed Breville as the instructions clearly say not to return the unit to the place where you bought it and they had FedEx email a prepaid label for mailing. It took 14 days for the new unit to arrive from the time that I dropped it off at FedEx. This new unit has a /A after the model number - I do not know what that indicates.

The single cup brewing (adjustable from 7.5 to 21 ounces) is EXCELLENT. There is a phase in the brewing cycle called "steeping". The pre-heated brewing water is held in the basket with the grounds for a certain period of time (determined by user settings) to "steep" the coffee and then released into the cup below. This steeping phase is not available when the carafe is selected (the basket could never hold up to 12 cups of coffee). This just means that the coffee made in the carafe will not be as flavorful as when an individual cup is made.
I have also found that with this high end coffee machine, I need "high end" beans. It's similar to an expensive car requiring premium fuel. The DD coffee beans that I used in the Cuisinart do not taste very good in the YouBrew. Now, I am buying gourmet type or highly rated beans as I can brew an "outstanding" cup of coffee. Along with that, I also buy bottled water in the grocery store as the coffee is only as good as the water.
I would highly recommend this coffee maker if you can justify the initial price, the cost of very good beans and bottled water. I have never had a coffee maker like this before. Five stars!

Best on the market

"This is a great product. It functions as described by Breville... it's the cadillac of coffee brewers. I tried others and took them all back within a few days, but I kept the Breville You Brew and I am enjoying really well brewed coffee.

Read the manual carefully before using and follow the instructions. You will get good results unless you picked up a bad unit,which happens occasionally even with good manufacturers.

I like that it:

a) It is an attractive stainless steel unit that is very well designed;
b) It allows you to choose variable size single cups, custom or use of the carafe to make coffee for many.
c) It is programmable
d) It permits choice of blend and strength
d) Easy to wash immediately after use
e) Has facility for cleaning
f) Signals to prevent overfill and calls when coffee has been brewed
g) Does a good grinding of coffee beans
h) Allows choice of using pre-ground coffee.

What I don't like:

a) It does not come with Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee... the best.

General:

a) No experience yet with servicing/ support from Breville.

New to YouBrew... No More Keurig

"After returning 4-5 Keurigs (forget the amount) I've decided to go back to a regular coffee maker. I did a lot of research on all the coffee makers available. Selling points of the YouBrew were:
1. Ability to make various size cups to a carafe.
2. Ability to use fresh beans or regular ground coffee(which I grind myself separately or store bought if desperate) .
3. Ability to set different strengths depending on my mood and for others.
4. EASY CLEAN UP compared to other reviews on other coffee makers.
5. Grinding my own bean separately allows me to adjust the strength of the coffee when making a 12 cup carafe.
6. If you use a 10/12 oz Tervis Tumbler and use a single cup setting and then click until you see 3 bars, set to intense.. that is one strong cup of coffee and fills almost to the top of the Tervis. Perfection !

**Others have complained that the burr grinder is loud... it's fine.
*** Others have said there is a plastic taste.. Just wash the gold filter and plastic housing it sits in, wash that with soap and water a bit and it's just fine ! No plastic flavor.
**Others have complained that the coffee is not hot in the carafe. The coffee is very hot and that was with a cold carafe. I do not see the need to warm it up.
*** Set up was a breeze I didn't even need the manual.

The only issue I have is I can't set up the auto start. If anyone knows how to do this PLEASE let me know.

COMPLETELY SATISFIED

"I did a lot of research on both the Technivorm and the You Brew. I walked into Sur La Table and they were demonstrating the You Brew and I was so impressed by the coffee maker itself and the taste. I quickly went and bought my own You Brew and completely love it! Not only is it a beautiful machine, it really makes great coffee. Of course, only use the best coffee and filtered water. It does take a while to brew a single cup, but great coffee should never be rushed. Brewing a carafe of coffee is faster and so far I feel it tastes even better. All the concerns and complaints I read about I found not to be true for me. The coffee is not hot enough - false. It takes too long to brew the coffee, true, but why does that matter? Again, great coffee should never be rushed! The grinder is too loud - false, you should hear the Cuisanart burr grinder, I would have to wait until 9 a.m. to start it up or wake the neighbors. Heating up your carafe is not a big deal - really. I am so happy I bought this machine and can't wait to use it every weekend. The bottom line is if you can walk into a store and test the coffee maker, do it. A great cup of coffee is different for everyone and everyone has different expectations of what makes a great coffee maker, it's really what makes you happy. I am an avid lover of coffee and out to taste the best cup of coffee and I am completely satisfied with my Breville You Brew."

The best there is right now

"Have been trying some brewers and this is the best right now. Had the earlier one-cup brewer from Breville but had to send two back because of bad clock. This works excellent.

Just one thing - give the brewer a couple of days while you try out different settings. The first ten cups did taste plastic and I was close to return it. Then I read some feedbacks and decided not to and I am happy for that now!

Hard to get the last coffee out of the carafe but since it is not heated external it tastes fresh all the time.

If you use paper filters you save about 20% of your bean consumption because you can choose a less intensive setting.

Customer service is slow but professional. I rather have a correct answer late than a thank you very much we appreciate your business but cannot help fast.

You Brew is Impressive

"I just purchased the You Brew today from a major retailer in my area. My previous competitive Brew and Grind (Capresso), started smoking last night and I was devastated to find it was totally gone. I have been keeping a constant view of other products and recently purchased the Breville Toaster with the motorized toast cycle, as well as Bagel function. I was so impressed with it's operation and classic look on my counter, I also searched what other products were on my interest list! Well when I found the You Brew and the options for single cup as well as Carafe I thought this was far reaching to my current non breville brand. Never thinking that my Capresso would have gone down in a "puff of smoke", I immediately found a local retailer (William Sonoma) who had the Breville product in stock. I immediately purchased it this morning. After some familiarization with the new machine left me in awe. I realized that for what I paid for the competitor brand this unit offered me far more in terms of flexibility and functionality. I am in the computer field so I find the technology far above par to other coffee makers on the market. I have read both positive and negative reviews on the Temperature and I can tell you I heated the Carafe with Boiling water from the Microwave prior to brewing and it maintained adequate temperature for about 4.5 hours. I understand some people may find this inadequate, but since the coffee is not on a burner for that time, you can always slighty warm it for a few extra seconds in the microwave without having that "Burned" taste found in non Thermal carafes, which are on heat for typically up to 2 hours. The single cup option is fantastic! It brews a delicious cup of coffee. If I didn't put Cream and Sugar in my coffee the temps out of the carafe at 5 hours are just ready to drink temp.
I am hopeful the product continues to be a strong performer. Other than the inability to adjust grind, I have no complaints. I brewed a full carafe on Maximum intenisty which only yielded 9 cups due to the higher flavor intensity and I actually had to add 1-2 cups of boiling water to the carafe to top it off as the coffee was too strong and I now find the Max Strong setting is just perfect, yielding me the full 12 cups! It's almost 100% perfect!
So far I am more than impressed and happy! Thank you Breville for such a quality product! "
