December 11, 2010Broke After Six months
"The plastic thing that the portafilter locks into broke after six month. (See Mike review on 1/15/10) Did the company offer to replace it under warranty? Nope. It's only a $8 dollar part (plus tax and shipping $8.0), but without it the machine is useless. I can understand one part being defective, but when other people have the same problem, it tells me there is a design defect. The part is injection molded plastic and could just as easily be made from cast aluminum and would last a lifetime.
September 16, 2010I have no problem with this machine?
"a little maintainence is all it needs.I clean it out soon after use with included cleaning pin, wipe the frother down and blow it out with steam.I periodically clean the unit internally with recommended scale deposit cleaner.I doubt all on here who have problems with clogging? try a little harder. We have owned ours for about three years, yes it does spew out water for a bit out of the frother however if I let it heat up a bit longer its seems to be less severe and even so..big deal, I just catch it in a washcloth.Very god value, the best I think.I use a solis burr grinder and Lavazza super crema coffee."
August 7, 2010Good machine but the pump seems weak
"I bought a Cafe Modena machine and liked it so much that I bought another one for my Mom. While my machine has been problem free the one I bought for her continues to have problems. I have removed the baffle around the steam frother tube which has helped but she still has problems with clogging of the steamer even though she swears that she blows down the tube after each use. I have visited her and disassembled the tube to clean out the frother but after several months she finds the same problem.
This machine has a 15 bar pump and I wonder if a stronger pump would be better. If I get too fine a grind on the coffee the machine has to struggle to get the water through the coffee. I see that 15 bar pumps are pretty much the defacto standard but I wonder if a 20 or 25 bar pump might be better."
June 27, 2010Conflicted.
" I'm not a professional, but I've made my own coffee for the last 25 years. Making my morning coffee is one of my favorite times of the day. I'm ok with the fact that drawing shots and steaming milk can be quirky sometimes, you get used to it and it becomes part of the routine. I'm ok with the buzz of the pump while it brings me coffee, and I'm ok with the sound made while it steams my milk. I enjoy that coffee making is a personal process.
My problem is that I'm a latte and mocha drinker. This little machine makes some great espresso, regardless of the price point. The steam wand and the whole steam process are about to make this a return item for me. To be completely fair, it's not even the wand so much, because when you use the included frothing cup, it does a decent enough job for me.
My biggest problem is with the fact that, more often than not, the wand will spray a stream of water on to my counter, sometimes for up to five seconds, before steam is produced. It's enough to make me return the machine.
I don't know if this is a case of the product not being tested before release, or if a supplier change altered the production models from the prototype, but I have to believe the product development team has at least discussed this issue.
As it stands with me, I have a little more than two weeks left to find a way to fix it, or I'll be forced to return this awesome little espresso machine. If there is a way to correct it please let me know, because there are no other Breville products in the price range, and after reading other reviews, I'm afraid an exchange for the same model would net me the same result."
April 29, 2010good,but
"I have had this machine for a year and a half. I use it every day for 3-4 doubles. The espresso has been consistently good. I don't use the steamer frother wand out of time constraints. My only complaint is the inability to see the water level through the "viewing window". Almost impossible.
Thanks for your feedback on viewing the water level indicator. We will pass that along to our product development team.
April 14, 2010GOOD MACHINE FOR THE PRICE.
"I got this one to replace an capresso that I've had for 18 months. This Breville is a far better espresso machine the Capresso, whick always made weak espresso and water was always left in the filter basket. I had no problem making perfect espresso with perfect crema right out of the box.
I don't lik the light feeling to the machine and it's very hard to see the water level.
I got it on sale and saved a bundle and that made it a good value."
March 10, 2010good little machine
"Abit noisy but with that said this machine makes great espresso.
I have had no issues with the frothing or steaming as long as it's kept clean.
No complaints my wife and I use it 2 sometimes three times a day."
February 2, 2010Regret
"that I did not pay some more.
We buy good beans and milk, but taste just cannot right....I mean what do you expect with this price of machine right? Yup, you get what you pay for.
But, I still enjoy my espresso drink every night.
January 23, 2010Great Product - Use it several times every day!
"My wife doesn't drink coffee but enjoys her Chai Tea made with steamed milk.
We both thought it would be one of those impulse purchases and we would not use it after 3 or 4 weeks. That was 3 years ago. We still use it every day - 3 or 4 times a day!
Yes, it's noisy and vibrates a lot but it makes a good latte! I never leave it because it hardly takes any time to fill two shots, so my cups don't dance away on me.
My only complaint is that the steamer wand clogs up with milk and I have to be diligent to clean it. I let it "blow out" after every use but still have to take the tip off every week to clean it."
January 15, 2010Breaks Regularly.
"I don't have any problem making espresso shots with it. The frother is weak, and the wand is too small. It does vibrate and the lid rattles. Also the water level is impossible to see. But the real problem I have with this POS is that the plastic thing that the portafilter locks into breaks regularly. It develops a hairline crack presumably from all the pressure it is under, then at some point it fails. When you're pulling a shot, there is loud pop, and a hiss, and you and your kitchen are covered in espresso grounds. The first one broke after I had it a little over a year. Did the company offer to replace it under warranty? Nope. It's only a $4 or $5 dollar part (plus tax and shipping), but without it the machine is useless. So I ordered a replacement. This one lasted about a year also. I can understand one part being defective, but when two fail in identical manners, it tells me there is a design defect. The part is injection molded plastic and could just as easily be made from cast aluminum and would last a lifetime."
